Journalists must join a press organization that is official and has a clear legal umbrella and is registered with the Press Council. This is in accordance with the mandate that has been stated in the Basic Press Law No. 40 of 1999.

Journalists in carrying out their daily journalism duties which include, seeking, obtaining, possessing, storing, processing and conveying information in the form of writing, sound, images, sounds and images as well as graphic data as well as in other forms using print media, mediaelectronics and all types of available channels (Law No. 40 of 199 on the Press)Therefore, as a journalist, don’t ignore press organizations that are recognized by the Press Council, because nowadays many press organizations have sprung up. .so that journalists often feel deceived, which ones are official and registered in the Press Council and which press organizations are only included in the category of community journalists’ organizations and are not registered with the Press Council. So its existence is not recognized. .by both the press and the government.

Every journalist may choose one of the press organizations whose legality is recognized by the Press Council. .The article is that there are often forms of intimidation and acts of violence against journalists who are carrying out journalistic duties in the field related to reporting.

In this case, as a journalist when carrying out his duties and functions as a watch dog for democracy and state sovereignty.. Therefore, journalists must uphold the Journalistic Code of Ethics (KEJ) as the guidelines for journalists in carrying out their daily journalism duties. KEJ itself applies to all journalists who join press organizations that have been registered with the Press Council.

The article, before the KEJ was enacted, it was called the Indonesian Journalist Code of Ethics (KEWI) which was a product of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) as the only press organization during the New Order (Orba) government under the Suharto regime.

However, since the Reformasi era in 1998 and the fall of the Suharto regime, press organizations have sprung up. PWI is no longer the only journalist organization as a forum for members of the press. .it was triggered by the banning of Tempo Magazine, Detik Tabloid and Monitor, which was carried out by the Sieharto regime.

The Soeharto regime government at that time immediately revoked the Press Publishing Business License (SIUPP) as the “ghost” of press publishing. .Unfortunately, at that time PWI was unable to defend the three press publications. Instead, PWI agreed to the New Order regime’s government to carry out the ban by “confirming”.

The case of the banning of the three print media was the trigger for the proliferation of press organizations. .Empirically, it turned out that PWI was unable to defend its members, especially when the Suharto regime banned the three national print media (Tempo Magazine, Detik and Monitor).

After the ban and the non-enactment of SIUPP in the reform era, dozens of press organizations outside PWI began to emerge, such as the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) which was founded by former Tempo Magazine journalists, the Television Journalists Association (IJTI) and dozens of other press organizations.

When receiving intimidation and acts of violence when journalists are carrying out journalistic duties and reporting, then it will become a common problem, including the press organization as a place for the journalists to take shelter. .All journalists and press organizations are required to carry out legal defenses professionally in accordance with the mandate as stated in the Basic Press Law Number 40 of 1999.

In supernatural terms, the gait of a journalist when there are parties who try to prevent them from carrying out their journalistic duties, especially when there are acts of intimidation and violence against journalists, actually the press organization concerned must defend the law in a professional and professional mannerproportional.

It is so important for journalists to join press organizations whose legality is recognized by the Press Council and the government. Because the journalist’s job is considered to be very vulnerable to acts of intimidation and violence. .In fact, cases of intimidation and acts of violence often happen to journalists who are carrying out their journalistic duties in the field when reporting. **
